FRITZ!Box and Windows 7: The Perfect Combination

The new “FRITZ!Box and Windows 7″ series highlights the advantages of the interplay between AVM products and Windows 7. Computers with the new Microsoft operating system can connect to the Internet using FRITZ!Box without any updates. The FRITZ!WLAN USB Sticks, which are ideal for WLAN connections between computers and the FRITZ!Box, are also ready for Windows 7.

The focus of this first part is on simple instructions for setting up a home network. With Windows 7 it is child’s play to use the FRITZ!Box to connect your home computer to the Internet and to other computers in a home network.

Secure Encryption with WPA2

After just a few clicks a connection to the FRITZ!Box is established. Both FRITZ!Box and Windows 7 encrypt this connection using WPA2, currently the most secure protection for WLAN connections. For more details about how to configure an optimum WLAN home network, click here.

The Network and Sharing Center: The Point of Entry for Home Networks

Yet Windows 7 offers even more new functions to facilitate networking. The central point of entry for creating networks is the “Network and Sharing Center” (accessed via “Start / Computer / Network / Network and Sharing Center”). For example, existing network connections can be viewed and new connections created here. This is also where file and printer sharing can be configured for the home network. The Network and Sharing Center

The network overview classifies devices according to their function in the network

The network overview (accessed via Windows Explorer -> Network) is very helpful too. It not only displays the various devices but also classifies them according to their function in the network and enables the user to take specific actions.

Network infrastructure devices, such as the FRITZ!Box as a WLAN router, have their own category in this section. Therefore, right-clicking on the FRITZ!Box entry, for instance, allows the user to call up the operating interface.

Windows 7 Network

The Home Network is also the Focus of Part Two

The home network is also the subject of part 2 of the “FRITZ!Box and Windows 7″ series. In this installment you will learn things like how to integrate printers and remote connections into your network.

FRITZ!Box and Windows 7: Multimedia in the network

The Media Server automatically offers the music, video and image files to the corresponding playback devices in the network. The media files can be played or displayed by all devices in the FRITZ!Box network that support the UPnP-AV standard.

This could be a stereo system, for instance, or the new Media Player integrated in Windows 7. The overview of the Windows Media Player displays not only the local media library, but conveniently, the FRITZ!Box Media Server as well. The media made available by the FRITZ!Box are then accessed just as simply and conveniently as data stored locally.

Music files are transmitted from the FRITZ!Box directly to the stereo system

The Windows Media Player can not only play back music, it can even forward it any other playback devices integrated in the home network. Use the “Play to” command, available when you right-click on the title, album or playback list.

Then the music is transmitted directly from the USB storage device connected to the FRITZ!Box to the stereo system. The big advantage: Now the computer can be switched off. Of course, pictures or video can be transmitted instead of music, for instance to a TV integrated in the network.

New products for the home network with FRITZ!Box

At Cebit 2011, AVM is presenting a slew of innovations relating to home networking. The focus is on more WLAN and DECT, and the incorporation of devices without their own WLAN radio.

New: FRITZ!WLAN Repeater 300E – more WLAN N and Gigabit LAN

With the FRITZ!WLAN Repeater 300E, wireless WLAN convenience is now available even where range used to be limited by structural factors. The Repeater is the ideal way to extend existing WLAN networks. An integrated Gigabit Ethernet connection incorporates other network-enabled devices like TVs, set-top boxes, satellite/TV receivers, and printers and network hard drives into the home network. The compact Repeater is easy to plug into any socket, can be incorporated into the WLAN network at the touch of a button (WPS), and is compatible with any WLAN router.

The Repeater is ideal to extend existing WLAN networks.

New: FRITZ!Powerline 500E – data transfer via the power supply

In future, the FRITZ!Powerline 500E will help in situations where a network connection is required but new cabling is to be avoided. The small adapter extends the Gigabit LAN cable via the house power line, meaning that each socket in the house becomes a network connection. Startup is incredibly simple – plug in, connect the PC or network device, and that’s it! FRITZ!Powerline 500E is fitted with a 128-bit AES encryption ex works and is based on the standard IEEE P1901, supporting speeds of up to 500 Mbit/s.

With FRITZ!Powerline each socket in the house becomes a network connection.

New: FRITZ!Fon C3 – excellent convenience in a classic format

FRITZ!Box for new LTE broadband technology

AVM is presenting a FRITZ!Box for the new LTE mobile phone standard. AVM’s very first LTE device, the new FRITZ!Box 6840 LTE combines all the functions important for communication in a single device – WLAN N, Gigabit, network storage, a telephone system, and a DECT base station. With the FRITZ!Box LTE, several users can connect to broadband via LTE radio at the same time, meaning that all the important features for the home network are ready for use around the clock on the LTE connection as well.

FRITZ!Box means fast Internet for everyone in the home network

With the FRITZ!Box LTE, all devices in the home network have fast access to the Internet. Via a single device – the FRITZ!Box – PCs, notebooks, games consoles, and even the television can benefit immediately from the exciting new speeds of LTE.

FRITZ!Box 6840 LTE, AVM’s first FRITZ!Box for the new mobile phone standard.

New LTE standard relies fully on IP

With the introduction of LTE, mobile phone providers are relying on the technical advantages offered by the available broadband networks ADSL and cable. The fourth generation of the wireless network standard is based fully on the Internet protocol (IP). LTE applies a further procedure known from WLAN technology. Several antennas increase data rates, which currently achieve a maximum of 100 Mbit/s for downloads and 50 Mbit/s for uploads. This makes LTE’s data rates comparable to broadband via VDSL and cable.

FRITZ!Box 6840 LTE: top-notch features including telephony

Up to six mobile components can be connected to the integrated DECT base station. Thanks to the integrated NAS functionality (Network Attached Storage), the FRITZ!Box LTE makes photos, music, videos, and other files available right across the network. Devices such as storage media or printers connected via USB 2.0 can also be accessed in the home network via print and media servers – even when the computer is switched off.

Broadband Internet even for rural areas

Areas in Germany without a broadband connection or with low transfer rates can now obtain a fast broadband Internet connection with the LTE mobile phone network.

State-of-the-art ADSL technology and telephony equipment

The FRITZ!Box Fon WLAN 7330 is equipped with the latest ADSL technology and supports the soon-to-be-introduced Internet protocol IPv6. One of the main strengths of the FRITZ!Box 7330 is its telephony equipment with an integrated answering machine and fax receiver. The DECT base station serves for up to six cordless telephones. An analog telephone or fax machine can be connected as well.

Hassle-free telephony via fixed-line network and Internet

The new FRITZ!Box 7330 offers another ideal solution: integrated smartphones in a home network. FRITZ!App Fon can connect a smartphone to the FRITZ!Box quickly and easily via WLAN. Smartphones can then be used at home for hassle-free conversations via a fixed-line network or the Internet. The WLAN and ADSL connection makes using smartphones at home much faster and more convenient: surfing or using e-mail, for instance, is noticeably quicker with ADSL.
